Seniors’ Social Media Use Up – Are You Listening?

June 24, 2011 | By | No Comments

Got grandparents? If you do, there’s a reasonable chance they’re using a social network. A recent study by MyVoucherCodes found that 22% of all grandparents over 60 use sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

What’s more, the study found they’re active on those social media networks, with slightly over half logging in at least once a week and 35% logging in a few times a month.

Other nuggets from this U.K. study:

  • 68% chose their favored social network in the last year.
  • 51% said they were encouraged to join by younger family members.
  • 25% said they joined to find old friends.
  • 20% said they joined to keep in touch with family and friends.

Takeaway: Yes, they’re U.K. stats but they support Pew findings that show social network use among older Americans doubled from 2009-2010. As more seniors discover social networks, it will be important for brands that target them to pay more attention to the online chatter they’ll generate.

If you’re marketing to the Gray Generation, now is the time to start listening.
