Social Media Off The Wall: Seagulls, Flash Mobs, and Great American Fun
The last week of June was an interesting week in social media. We saw the Pope tweet; yes Pope Benedict XVI sent his first tweet from an iPad on Tuesday. Former social media giant MySpace, was sold by News Corp. to Specific Media for $35 million this week (News Corp. bought MySpace for $580 million in 2005). Interestingly enough Specific Media recently said that actor Justin Timberlake will take an ownership role in MySpace and be a part of its future. Add in Social Media Day and we had a great week in social media.
In a video uploaded this week on YouTube by Opica1983, a seagull in Cannes, France snatches Lukáš Karasek’s GoPro video camera. Appearances are always deceiving; according to Mashable it might be a viral marketing attempt by GoPro Cameras. Although the video may be a marketing tool it is amazing footage from a “Bird’s Eye View”.
What do you think about the video? Was capturing the footage of the seagull simply luck or was it planned ahead?
Large Flash Mob
According to Wikipedia, “A flash mob (or flashmob) is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire.” I am convinced that everyone who uses the web has at one point seen a video of a Flash Mob. If you have not seen one I recommend watching the video below:
The group of 1,700 participants was organized by the North Point Community Church (a church with four locations in Atlanta: Buckhead, Browns Bridge, North Point and Watermark) and the event was called “The Walk”. They filmed it while high school students and volunteers from the church were on an annual trip to Panama City Beach, Florida. They did a great job with it and had me fooled at the beginning thinking it was just another lame flash mob video.
What do you think of “The Walk” and other flash mobs?
Happy Independence Day!
The 4th of July is always one of my favorite days of the year. It mixes Patriotism, food, and the great outdoors; what else could ask for? As with most holidays there will be plenty of people traveling and lighting fireworks. Have fun, stay safe, and avoid making the same mistakes as the people in the video below:
The Red, white, and blue, Baby! Enjoy this special holiday weekend with friends and family!
