Social Media Off The Wall: MythBusted, Amazing Speed Boat Catch, & Will Ferrell The Beer Salesman
Social Media Off The Wall is a post every Friday where I share funny and entertaining stories, or digital media clips that are trending & being shared frequently on social networks. If you have an interesting story or media bit that you think I can use in SMOTW, please feel free to share it with me via Twitter: (@mlewii | #smotw).
On Tuesday, the popular Discovery Channel television series MythBusters had an experiment go awry at the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department bomb range in Dublin, California. They were testing a myth related to things being shot out of a cannon; the problem was that the cannonball they shot missed the barriers and went through a residential neighborhood.
“This is the worst we can imagine happening. I have kids of my own, I have a house of my own; I can’t imagine how angry I would be to find this happening to it,” claimed the show’s host Adam Savage after inspecting the damage caused by the cannonball.
The video received over 1 million views in just over a day on YouTube before it was pulled by ABC for copyright reasons. I am a fan of this show and very interested to see what happens after the investigation is completed.
Will Ferrell = Old Milwaukee
Three videos featuring Will Ferrell and Old Milwaukee beer recently surfaced on YouTube. The videos look rough and Will Ferrell does his own thing, which led people to question where the videos came from. Old Milwaukee certainly is not all over the media outlets promoting social media so I can see where people thought Ferrell did the videos without the knowledge of Old Milwaukee.
The video above is the third of the series and has been seen almost 200,000 times on YouTube. The major problem is that Old Milwaukee does not have a YouTube channel and are not fully benefitting from their new age advertising campaign (leading people to question authenticity). The videos are great, why would they not want to receive credit for their creativity?
Frisbee Speed Boat Catch
Australian Frisbee throwing champion Brodie Smith set up a wild scenario where he would launch a Frisbee 500ft from the Narrows Bridge in Perth, Australia while his buddies in a speed boat try to catch up to the disc and actually pull it in. They actually pull it off!
This is one of the most amazing videos I have seen in a while:
Although it did not go as exactly planned, Brodie’s friend Derek Herron’s diving catch made the video even better. The video has over 3.5 million views in its first 8 days on YouTube and is being featured all over the web.
Next week’s Social Media Off The Wall blog post will feature the best viral videos and social media stories from 2011. If you have a topic or story you think should be shared, please feel free to send it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks and have a great weekend!
