Social Media off The Wall: Fabio, Celebrity Shakespeare, Fail like a Boss
This week began with the FIFA Women’s World Cup breaking twitter records. Google+ continues to grow quickly despite still having the “invite only” model. Borders Bookstores was forced to close their doors after 40 years near the top of the industry. Social media continues to change the landscape and structure of the digital world. On a lighter note, here are some great laughs from the past week:
Last week Old Spice launched a new advertising campaign featuring Fabio as their “New Old Spice Guy.” They built a YouTube channel called NewOldSpiceGuyFabio where they uploaded 6 new videos (700 Subscribers, over 160,000 channel views). The Piano video and Hair video below are by far the best videos of the campaign.
The video has received almost a half a million views in just a week. Fabio was a great choice! Old Spice continues to show why they are thought leaders in viral marketing campaigns.
JIMPRESSIONS (no, that’s not a typo)
People, who do great impressions of celebrities like comedian Frank Caliendo, really entertain the audience and are just plain funny. Actor Jim Meskimen, put together a stage show where he performs Shakespeare as different celebrities. Here is a video of Jim doing his impressions:
Why did this make it to this week’s list? Well it’s been viewed over 125,000 times in just 3 days. Funny guy – if you are out west you can see Jim’s show live at The Acting Center LA July 29th & 30th.
Fail like a Boss
In one of the fastest trending videos this week (1.25 million views in 3 days), a Portuguese man (Helio Imaginario) tries to skateboard downhill. He is not the type of man that you would expect to see trying to skateboard downhill but I am sure he understands now that it was a poor decision.
This is like trying to ride a dirt bike for the first time in your 50’s; Helio should probably leave the skateboarding to the more agile and coordinated youth.
