Social Media Off The Wall: Bucked Biker, HOF Flash Mob, and The Hair Scare

October 14, 2011 | By | No Comments

Social Media Off The Wall is a post every Friday where I share funny and entertaining stories or digital media clips that are trending & being shared frequently on social networks.  If you have a great story or media bit that you think I can use in SMOTW, please feel free to share it with me via Twitter (@mlewii | #smotw).

Bucked Biker

We have about 10 deer in our neighborhood and I always stop so they can cross the road or allow them time to make a move.  Most of the time they just stand and stare (“deer in the headlights” expression is factual) like my truck is some kind of alien craft. Despite destroying plants in people’s yards they are quite harmless; at least I thought that before seeing this video of a mountain biker in Africa:

His teammate behind him clearly sees the animal coming but Mountain Biker, Evan van der Spuy of Team Jeep South Africa got blindsided by a Red Hartebeest. He was competing in the Time Freight Express MTB race at Albert Falls but obviously had an unbelievable finish. Thankfully Evan was able to walk away without any major injuries and now he has an epic video (already has 7.7 million views on YouTube in 4 days) and an amazing story to tell the world!

Hair Scare

If you watch football or watch enough TV, you have seen Troy Polamalu with his insane hair in the Head & Shoulders commercials. The Head & Shoulders team wanted to take their advertising to another level, so they arranged to have Troy Polamalu pose like his wax statue at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood . He scared quite a few unsuspected gawkers.

The video has been all over the news and has over 1.2 million views on YouTube.  He is intimidating on and off the field but seems to have a great sense of humor. How badly would he have scared you?

Hall of Fame Flash Mob

Hall of Fame Quarterback, Steve Young was out celebrating his 50th birthday with his family at an outdoor restaurant in Palo Alto, California. Steve did not realize that most of the people around the area near Stanford Plaza were organized by his wife Barbara, for a surprise flash mob.

At first Steve looks a little shocked but after he realized what was going on it he looks liked he really enjoyed it. His wife Barbara’s birthday idea was great and now has set the stage for epic birthday celebrations.  Do you know of any other celebrity surprise birthday presents like Steve Young’s flash mob?
