Social Media Lessons from a Robot

March 1, 2011 | By | No Comments

What can a robot teach us about being social? Paul Gillin, in Let Your People Speak!, shares lessons brands can glean from an unlikely source: Watson, the IBM robot that trounced two top Jeopardy! champs, and the team of engineers behind it.

IBM shared their journey with Watson in dozens of YouTube videos and chat sessions. After the robot’s victory, the company posted an 11-minute video, which included the engineers’ real-time reactions to Watson’s answers (both right and wrong.)

Paul writes that the story of Watson was told by the engineers. Not the suits. Not the PR person. The story was told by the men and women who actually made the victory happen and the result is a surprisingly compelling narrative.

The idea of creating an engaging story for a social media campaign can be overwhelming. But the truth is that we sometimes look too hard. Often the stories that will grab customers and clients are the stories within our own organizations.

We’d love to hear your thoughts!

And for your insights: Domo arigato, Mr. Paul Gillin!
