Social Media is Not Free

As a long-time fan of perpetual big kids Adam and Jamie on Mythbusters, I was immediately intrigued by Pam Sahota’s Myth Buster: Social Media is Free. While she doesn’t blow up any innocent objects in her post, she does bust the “social media is free” myth. As Pam writes, it might be “free to sign-up, but not exactly free to maintain.” She shares some interesting nuggets from the 2011 Social Media Marketing Industry Report:

  • 58% of marketers report they use social media for 6 or more hours each week.
  • 34% use social 11 or more hours each week.
  • 15% tap into social more than 20 hours weekly.

Social media is becoming an increasingly must-have component of business strategy, but monitoring and responding to everything from Yelp reviews to Facebook comments is an investment of time and money.
