Social Media for Mobile Grew 37% in the Last Year
More than 72.2 million Americans accessed social media and networking sites or blogs via their smartphone or other mobile device in August 2011, according to comScore, an international online measurement and analysis company. This number represents a 37% increase in the number of mobile-device-based social media users over the last year.
“Social media is one of the most popular and fastest-growing mobile activities, reaching nearly one third of all U.S. mobile users,” says Mark Donovan, senior vice president for mobile at comScore. Donovan further notes that nearly 60% of American smartphone users access social media with their mobile devices each month.
Some 40 million mobile users, representing more than half the total social media audience, access a social media site or blog nearly every day, an increase of 58% over 2010, according to comScore’s research.
In August 2011, Facebook had a mobile audience of 57.3 million, a 50% increase over 2010. Twitter had 13.3 million mobile users (75% increase), while LinkedIn had a mobile audience of 5.4 million (69% increase).
While participating in mobile social media activities, more than 80% of users read posts and updates by people they know personally and almost 70% posted status updates via their mobile devices, according to social media metrics from comScore’s MobiLens service.
ComScore’s analysts also reported that in August 2011, almost 53% of mobile social media users read posts from a variety of organizations, brands and events. Nearly 28% of users clicked on an advertisement while using mobile social media sites—a statistic of particular importance to online businesses and marketers.
