Social Media Converts: First the Amish, Now the Pope

June 30, 2011 | By | One Comment

Last week we shared a report about some Amish businesses using social media, like Facebook, to connect with customers. Now we have a report that Pope Benedict XVI has sent his first Tweet—and he did it on an iPad, no less.

The pontiff tweeted: “Dear Friends, I just launched Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.”

The account (@news_va_en) will aggregate Vatican-run social media accounts (such as Facebook and YouTube) as well as press releases, messages, and the city-state’s newspaper and radio. Vatican officials say the Twitter account is designed to provide web-savvy audiences with a simple way to get information.

This isn’t the Vatican’s first foray into tech; it also launched a Facebook page in honor of John Paul II’s beatification in May.

Thoughts on one of the world’s oldest institutions leveraging social media to connect with their flock?
