Pepsi Launches Social Vending Machine

April 29, 2011 | By | No Comments

You may not actually be able to buy the world a Coke, but now you can apparently use a text to buy a pal a Pepsi. The new PepsiCo Social Vending Machine will let users send a free soft drink to a friend.

How does this wondrous machine work? The sender chooses a beverage from the machine and enters a friend’s mobile number along with a personalized text message, which contains a code the recipient will use to redeem the drink at another machine.

The new machine “extends our consumers’ social networks beyond the confines of their own devices and transforms a static, transaction-oriented experience into something fun,” said Mikel Durham,  chief innovation officer at PepsiCo in a statement at a trade show in Chicago.

The system isn’t tied into social sites like Facebook or Twitter yet, but reports are that social network site integration may be on the horizon. Check out the full story and video from Todd Wassermanon Mashable.
