Gen Xers Want Their Online Video Star
As a Gen Xer, I was an original card-carrying member of the MTV generation. Like many of my set, I inhaled video culture through everything from Friday Night Video fights to Madonna’s risqué VMA performance. So it came as no surprise that, according to a recent eMarketer report, Gen Xers love online video.
The report showed that about 75% of Generation X watches video online, and that number is expected to rise. That’s good news for marketers, says Marketing Pilgrim’s Cynthia Boris, because it gives businesses more options for connecting with that market. What’s more, online video is compatible with mobile marketing.
Some other interesting facts in the eMarketer report:
- 88% of Gen Xers are online and that number is expected to increase to 90.9% by 2015
- 74.% of Gen X internet users will watch online video in 2011 and by 2015 that number will increase to 80%
- What are Gen Xers buying? Top categories in the fall of 2010 included apparel, airlines tickets, book and hotel reservations.
Adding video to a company website gives “people a quick concise idea of the kinds of services that you provide and how you separate yourself from the competitors,” said Social Strategy1 CEO Mike Lewis during the recent Secrets to Social Media for Small Business webinar.
