When is a tweet not a tweet? The University of Iowa’s Tippie School of Management awarded a monster scholarship to the applicant with the “best tweet,” according to Mashable’s Jennifer Van Grove. Amusingly enough, the school didn’t require the responses to be actual tweets. Instead, the messages, which were an alternative to the university’s long essay question, were submitted via application form.
The winning student, John Yates, submitted this 68-character haiku:
Innovative and driven
Tippie can sharpen”
His prize was a full MBA scholarship valued at more than $37,000. Seriously.
With its tweet-less tweet, this campaign does not appear to be an attempt to drive a social media strategy—rather it has the aura of a publicity ploy.
