FB Launches Groupon-like Service

Facebook has expanded their Deals program to provide Facebook users with location-based specials much like Groupon, reports Lisa Braziel on Ignite Social Media. The social network had earlier launched a program to work with businesses to offer specials (now called Checkin Deals) to fans that “check-in” to specific Facebook locations, such as Golden State Warrior home games.

According to Inside Facebook, the social media marketing program allows subscribers to receive info about pre-paid coupons and events in their news feeds. What’s more, when a fan makes a purchase, they will be able to share their buy with friends through their feed. Currently Deals is free, however, experts expect Facebook will soon begin charging businesses a percentage of user spend for the service.

Deals is now only being offered in the test cities of Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego, and San Francisco, but merchants in other locations can submit a form on Facebook to indicate their interest in joining the program in the future.
