Etsy Taps into Popularity of Social Shopping

April 1, 2011 | By | No Comments

I’m in love with Etsy, the artisan shopping site where consumers can find everything from handmade pink leather purses to Darth Vader laptop decals. As if I needed one more reason to spend my hard-earned dollars there, Helen A.S. Popkin reports the site has now joined the growing number of daily deal social media sites, including Groupon, LivingSocial, and OfficeArrow, by launching Heartsy.

It has much in common with other social commerce sites: a highly-discounted daily deal and incentives for sharing deals with friends on Facebook, Twitter, or email. Heartsy also amps up the social factor by asking users to vote for which products they’d like to see offered in the future. The service is currently free for vendors, but reports say Etsy plans to charge a transaction fee in the future.

Thoughts on the rise of social commerce?
