Desperately Seeking Mommies – 2 Tips for Reaching Online Influencers

September 14, 2011 | By | No Comments

Need to connect with online influencers? In a guest post on Tamar Weinberg’s Techipedia,’s Vanessa Van Petten shares the tactics she used to take her website from 2 unique visitors (her and her mom) to over 200,000. The tips are geared toward tapping the mom blog set, but the core principles are suited for connecting with online influencers of any stripe, whether they blog about  BPA-free baby bottles or cutting-edge iPhone apps:

  1. Know your bloggers. One thing that’s clear from Vanessa’s tips: she knows her influencers. She knows mom bloggers don’t like being pitched. She has identified which parenting blogs her marketing needs to target. She knows how mommy bloggers differ from other bloggers. If you want to genuinely connect with influencers, you’ll need to know your unique audience just as thoroughly.
  2. Go where your bloggers are. You can’t engage an influencer on Twitter if she doesn’t use the microblogging site. Vanessa recommends going wherever the blogger hangs out—and then connect using that platform: follow her on Twitter, friend him on Facebook, or even send the influencer an email.

Online influencers are out there. Online listening will help you connect with them. From discovering their unique needs to identifying where they hang out online, social media monitoring lays the foundation for building a virtual stadium of enthusiastic brand fans.
