Today, Thursday June 30th, has been claimed “Social Media Day” by Mashable.com and others.  We at Social Strategy1 are very happy to celebrate the 2nd Annual Social Media Day and hope some of you chose to join your local Meetup for the celebrations tonight.

Last week I published a blog describing our Social Media Day Contest, “How Has Social Media Impacted or Changed Your Life?”  We received lots of great submissions that truly show the usefulness and impact social media has had on our daily lives.  Visit our Facebook Fan Page Wall to view all of the contest submissions. Thank you to everyone who participated, but like most contests, there can only be one winner.

Our winning entry comes from Kathrine Brody, a college student at the University of Alabama.  This past spring, she and everyone else in Tuscaloosa, Alabama had their lives changed by one of the most horrific and destructive natural disasters that region has ever seen.  Social media was not only their communication link to the outside world but it also connected everyone helping in the relief. Read Kathrine’s winning contest entry below:

“Social media impacted mine and thousands of other lives during the aftermath of the devastating Tuscaloosa tornado. Loved ones were found or heard from through the social media grapevine. Relief efforts were able to ask for supplies on Facebook and Twitter and receive them at a Tuscaloosa location within 30 minutes. Facebook and Twitter updates allowed for people to post updates about family/friends, ask for supplies and where they were needed, post photos of the devastation and most importantly to show support. These sites aren’t just for “social” purposes anymore and with this devastating instance, the sites have proven that they can make an important impact on society. I must say that without these social media sites my friends and I at UA Greek Relief would not have been able accomplish as much as we did.”

Congratulations Kathrine! We want to commend you and all the other people helping the massive relief efforts needed in Alabama.  It is great to see that Social Media not only changes lives, but helps save them as well.

Enjoy Social Media Day and stay tuned for more contests from Social Strategy1!
