There’s more to social media content than text. Think video. Yaniv Axen recently wrote “8 Reasons Every Ecommerce Site Should Get Serious About Video.” While his focus is on ecommerce, video is also a smart addition to social media strategy.

Video generates traffic. Your company has likely spent years investing in SEO strategies to boost online visibility—think of video as an addition to those SEO tactics. For example, Yaniv writes that Google is restructuring its results to reward websites that include videos. What’s more, videos posted on social networks, like Twitter and Facebook, will drive additional traffic back to the company website.

Consumers share video. Yaniv notes that a compelling video is more likely to be shared than a text-only blog or Facebook post—a good reason to make video part of your online customer engagement strategy. Insert video pieces to blogs, link to them on Twitter, or add them to Facebook posts.

What kind of video can you share on social media? It’s really only limited by your imagination, but here are a few sparks to get you started:

  • How-to’s
  • Thought leadership discussions
  • Archived webinars (like this one from Social Strategy1 on Corporate Policies in Social Media)
  • Conference or seminar clips
  • Video blog entries

What has been your experience with incorporating video into brand social media strategy?
