Yesterday marked 5 years since the first Tweet was sent. So there were Happy Birthday’s all over the internet. There were also many “Twitter Celebrates 5th Birthday” articles in the digital world. Here’s why some are calling it a birthday and other an anniversary:

March 16, 2006 – Twitter was conceptualized.

March 21, 2006 – First tweet sent by Jack Dorsey, “just setting up my twttr”.

July 15th, 2006 – Twitter was launched to the masses.

Regardless of which date you choose as a birthday or anniversary, yesterday Biz Stone co-founder of Twitter blogged with some facts about the growth of the company in the past 5 years.

“Twitter users now send more than 140 million Tweets a day which adds up to a billion Tweets every 8 days—by comparison, it took 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day to reach the first billion Tweets. While it took about 18 months to sign up the first 500,000 accounts, we now see close to 500,000 accounts created every day. All of this momentum and growth often pales in comparison to a single compassionate Tweet by a caring person who wants to help someone in need.”

The blog also, includes a video to celebrate the 5 year mark. In the video there are big celebrities like Martha Stewart, Snoop Dogg, and Secretary of the State Hillary Clinton.

Some of the most memorable tweets are posted on the Huffington Post.  I wonder what memorable tweets the Twitterverse will bring us in the next 5 years.
