In addition to being one of the best places to work and being named as one of MSN Money’s “10 Companies That Treat You Right”, Southwest Airlines gets social media and they recently shared some of their strategy. Mike Brown of Social Media Today gives a breakdown of a presentation that Laurel Moffat, Southwest Airlines Communication Specialist at a Kansas City American Marketing Association lunch event.

Some of the highlights in his post:

  • Big or Small, “Listen and Personalize” Is Fundamental
  • Social Media Takes People, but Not as Many as You Think
  • There Are Huge Opportunities in a Collaborative Social Media Strategy

What stood out to me the most is that from all the points being made about their strategy is that any company, no matter what size, can learn from what Southwest has done. Even though they weren’t exactly sure what they were doing, they started a blog in 2006. In 2007, way before most brands jumped in they were on Facebook and Twitter.

Maybe your company isn’t sure what to do in regards to social media so they do nothing. Maybe they’re doing something but don’t feel confident. Whether what to do is clear or not, social media interaction and having an online presence is no longer a choice.
